Becoming A Better Reader

Adult Learners

Adult Learners

There can be any number of reasons for someone to reach adulthood and still be struggling with reading.  Often, early literacy skills simply were not in place early in life, resulting in difficulties that were never addressed.  Once a child begins struggling, it’s very easy to feel defeated and to believe there’s something wrong with them.   This feeling of failure can cloud an entire school career.

Sometimes, there are simple strategies that can be taught, and sometimes there is an underlying learning disability that needs to be diagnosed.  The good news is that we are much better at diagnosing and working with reading difficulties than we were even a few years ago.

Besides just difficulty reading, there are a number of other issues for adult learners.  Do any of these comments sound familiar?

“I read slowly – one word at a time – and often forget what I’ve read by the time I get to the end of the sentence.  Reading is just too hard.”

“My child’s teacher explained how I could help my daughter do better in school, but I didn’t really understand what she was saying.  It’s so confusing, and I’m embarrassed to ask her to explain.”

“The doctor told me I had some condition I’ve never heard of.  I’d like more information, but I don’t know where to go.  He’s too busy to talk to me.”

“I think I’m eligible for medical insurance for my child, but I’m not sure.  How do I figure this out?”

“I’d like to start saving money for my future, but I really don’t know how to get the best return.  I’ve read about ways to make a lot of money, but I don’t know if I can trust them.  How can I tell a safe investment from a fraud?”

“The Internet is great!  How can I tell, though, if the information I’m getting is any good?  I’m also a little concerned about identity theft, worms, viruses, cookies.  What does it all mean?”

“I dropped out of school because I had a good job.  Now I want to buy a new car, and that job just doesn’t pay enough.  I can’t get anything better without an education.  Is it too late?”

There are a number of organizations that can help – many of them for free or very inexpensively.
