Green Valley Library up for $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant
Funds would create a community space for teens; voting ends Dec. 31
HENDERSON, Nev. - The Green Valley Library's Teen Services department has a big order on its holiday list this year, and only the public can help make it a reality.
The library is one of 1,096 ideas competing for a slice of $1.3 million awarded to people, businesses and nonprofit organizations with ideas that will make a positive impact on their communities. If awarded, the $25,000 grant would create The Teen Lounge, which would double the library space available for teen studying and socializing at the library, located at 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway. The room, partitioned from the rest of the library, would include designated seating areas for teen events and gaming, quiet study, reading and socialization. The grant would directly pay for furniture, partitions, computer equipment, art, electronics, a video game library and high-interest non-fiction book collection for teens.
Voting ends on Dec. 31. The grants are set to be awarded on Jan. 1.
"Although winning this grant would directly benefit teens at the Green Valley Library, it takes the community to win," said Jessica Sullenberger, teen services librarian. "The only way to win the grant is to have a huge network voting for the idea. People can vote every day during December, and it is open to anyone. Out of 1,000 proposals, only a handful will win based on the number of votes. Every single vote counts."
