Reading with Rover Nomination Form (PDF file)
What is Reading with Rover and where is it offered?
This unique private reading practice is offered by the Henderson District Public Libraries. Reading with Rover pairs trained, certified therapy dogs with children who are uncomfortable reading aloud. In this one-on-one setting the dogs provice their attention while children read aloud without fear of criticism or interruption..
Why would Reading with Rover encourage struggling readers to read?
Children may be uncomfortable reading with other children or adults, but are more willing to interact with an animal. Our "canine reading specialists" give their unconditional acceptance and emotional support. Children feel less self-conscious with dogs regardless of whether they stutter, mispronounce a word or stumble over sentences. The child knows the dog will not judge them in this relaxed nonjedgmental setting.
What are are children in the Reading with Rover program?
Any child in grades 2-5 experience difficulty in reading may be nominated for the program by a parent, teacher or caregiver. Children may show signs of learning, visual or physical disabilities or may be shy and have low self-esteem. Some children may be learning English language or need encouragement and reading practice.
How does the Reading with Rover program work?
Children are selected for the program by need. Once selected the child meets weekly with their assigned therapy dogs at a local Henderson District Public Library for six consecutive weeks for relaxed nonjedgmental reading practice. Each reading session is one-half hour in length and children may repeat the program as needed.
Are the dogs used in the Reading with Rover program trained?
Yes, all dogs in the program are trained, certified therapy dogs. All dogs have passed stringent national testing for obedience and temperament. These are the same dogs that visit hospitals, convalescent homes, hospices and rehab centers in our valley. Each of these dogs not only have experience in therapy work but have easygoing temperaments and they love children.
