Director's Report

Possible Board discussion of the Director’s report or various staff reports highlighting various administrative and staff activities since the last meeting.

There have been no major security issues since last meeting.

Tom Fay distributed a summary of components of the annual focus plan. Staff reports indicate statistical growth in numerous areas.

District Quarterly Reports: Gayle Hornaday distributed circulation statistics. Circulation is up 8.1% over last year. New library cards issued statistics are up 25%. There over 264,000 transactions. This is good progress toward HDPL’s 1 million circulation goal this year. $11,500 in cash and materials were returned during the quarter, at a cost of $2,700. Since materials recovery began in April $17,000 in cash and materials have been returned for a cost of just over $5,000.

Michelle Mazzanti distributed sample transcripts from the Veteran’s Oral History Project. There are currently 18 completed DVDs and transcripts being put into the collection. The DVDs and transcripts have also provided to the participants. Shannon Berndt recently did a presentation to the Navy Waves and found three WWII female veterans to interview. An interview was completed yesterday with a female WWII air traffic controller.

Kristy Price provided a list of community relation activities. Invitations were provided for the William Hug reception and Carr Chat which will commemorate National Friends of the Library week. The Board is requested to attend to show support for the Friends’ Board.

There is continuing discussion with the major sponsor for Mytutor.com and AskaLibrarian.com.

The Library Tree Lane events are fast approaching. The kick off will be November 17 th at 6:30 p.m. at the Paseo Verde Library.

Betsy Johnson summarized summer reading statistics. 2,800 children participated. There was noticeable growth in the 0-5 age group.

Florica Hagendorn gave program highlights for children and families. The Dogs on the Job program brought together organizations such as Henderson Police Department Canine Unit, ATF, Wynn Security team and the K-9 Service of Las Vegas. Families were able to learn about the important services provided by trained dogs in the community. This event was held at multiple HDPL locations.

Another popular program was Cartooning and Anime for Kids and Teens. A local artist offered tips for animal cartoons.

Leona Vittum-Jones explained that the Question of The Day program (created by Mary Spiller) has been very easy and popular to incorporate at the Malcolm Library. A question is provided and children learn library skills by using library resources to answer the question. When the correct answer is found, children receive a prize. Current events, programs and holidays are incorporated into the program.

Evelyn Walkowicz said the Bookmobile has 9 regular bookmobile stops, well ahead of the goal of six regular stops by January 2007. The Horizon seniors asked bookmobile staff to add a stop. Statistics were given to the Board. Regular users are increasing at every stop. Returns are almost as many as checked out. IT is working on connecting the bookmobile with the Polaris system allowing patrons to request books at specific bookmobile stops. Twenty comment cards have been received; all had positive comments such as appreciating the convenience and kids loving it. The “cozy corner” in the back of the bookmobile is very popular. Please visit the bookmobile blog to keep abreast of the adventures.

The outreach team is expanding programs to senior locations. Computer classes for seniors are being scheduled. Storytimes are being arranged at non-library locations. The ever expanding team will start story time at Robert Taylor Elementary School once a week in January 2007.

Evelyn Walkowicz said HDPL is still waiting on word on the LSTA grant which will enable expansion of outreach services.

Mae Giaimo explained 2 new programs: Spanish language computer classes fill a large need in Gibson service area. Turnout has been fabulous. The first class is basic; the second is free-form i.e., learning to work on job applications, completing the GED etc.

The Not So Grown Up Book Club for college students and young professionals is gaining popularity with thirteen people participating.

Large Print books are being filed into the regular collection. Besides providing more space and shelving opportunities, there is much more light in the stacks with no books on the top shelf. Patrons have been 50/50 on whether they like it, but seem to be adjusting well.

The ribbon cutting for the last two deposit collections, Espinoza Terrace and Palo Verde Gardens, is on November 2nd. The Board is invited to attend.

Tom Fay said several staff will be in Carson City next week defending grant requests: Laurie Orton has requested a standard competitive grant of $90,000 for the One Book One Community Program; and Evelyn Walkowicz is requesting an innovative grant of $100,000 for HDPL’s 0-6 Initiative to provide services to pre-schoolers.
