Job Purpose and Summary

In January 2009, operation of the Green Valley Library in Henderson, NV, will be transferred from Las Vegas-Clark County Library District to Henderson District Public Libraries. In September 2008, the position of Head of Circulation will be filled to take a role in planning facilities needs and staffing. After a closed period for necessary changes, the library will reopen early in 2009 with a new collection, a new staff, and a new program of services that will emphasize self-service, programming, and technology. Projected plans for the Green Valley Library include: • Computer center with 30 full-service public computer stations • Addition study and conference rooms • Remodeling of departmental service desks • Emphasis on self-service • Programming for all ages • Mobile reference • Friends of the Library used book store • Floating collection shared among all branches A one-desk concept, rather than separate public service desks, will be implemented in the Green Valley Library. The Head of Circulation will work closely with the other public service departments to ensure cooperation and fluidity among the three departments. The Head of Circulation will need to ensure that their staff is trained with baseline knowledge of Adult and Youth Services information. Henderson Libraries increasingly emphasizes self-service models and technologies. The Head of Circulation will be actively involved in developing policies and procedures that enable and encourage patrons to use self-service.

Qualifications

Two (2) years of college level work AND four (4) years of increasingly responsible circulation experience OR five (5) years of increasingly responsible circulation experience. Work experience must include two (2) years of supervisory experience. Knowledge and experience of public library circulation activities. Computer literacy required. Familiarity with Polaris automated circulation functions preferred. Must have a valid Nevada driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one in accordance with state law.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The initial employment period (from hiring until approximately Dec. 2008) will be spent as temporary Head of Circulation of the Gibson Library, overseeing an established circulation department of 6 FT and 8 PT staff, with duties as described for the permanent position of the Green Valley Head of Circulation. During this time, this Head of Circulation will also be empowered to participate, along with current Henderson Libraries staff, in realizing plans for the Green Valley Library, hiring branch staff, and other matters pertaining to the planning and opening of a new library. Duties of the position include the following: • Hire, direct, and evaluate circulation staff, shelvers, and volunteers, including training, scheduling, and making work assignments. • Assist in the preparation of manuals and procedures. • Perform all circulation functions at public service desk. • Assist library users in using self-check stations, public access computers, microfilm reader/printers and other public equipment. • Prepare information and data for statistical reports; maintain a variety of statistical records. • Apply and interpret policies for staff and library users. • Help coordinate library outreach activities. • Perform related duties as required. • Schedule includes evening and weekend hours. • Required to drive personal or library vehicle on library business. The position reports to the Library Branch Manager.

Salary and Benefits

Complete salary range: $19.33 – $29.76, per hour. Hiring level commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance; HDPL pays 100% for employee and 82% for dependents. In addition, HDPL offers paid short and long term disability insurance, long term care, PERS membership, tuition reimbursement, 125 plan (health and dependent care reimbursement), flexible schedule, generous vacation, sick, holiday and personal days. This position is non-exempt.

Schedule

Position available September, 2008; will include weekend and evening hours.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Normally seated, standing or walking at will; normal physical activity including some bending, pushing, pulling, and carrying, which may range up to 45 lbsl, upon occasion. Keyboarding and working at a computer monitor for extended periods required. Extended periods of standing may be required when working at service desk. Phone usage, reading, speaking, and listening required. Interaction with library users and vendors may include stressful situations related to resolving situations or problems.
