Job Purpose and Summary

This is a professional level librarian work assisting the public in using library materials and resources; analyzing and promoting collection development, acquisitions, and maintenance; program and project planning and development to meet the needs of the community.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university with coursework in the youth services field. Public library experience is preferred. Experience with PC productivity applications such as; word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, graphics and databases. PLEASE NOTE: Applicants currently pursuing a library science degree from an accredited college will be considered for the position. Salary compensation will be based on the Youth Services Specialist salary scales of $14.92 - $22.97 until completion of degree.

Tasks and Responsibilities

•Work at public service desks as assigned; conduct reference interview with library users in person or by telephone and assist them in locating materials and sources of information; instructing patrons in library usage; reader’s advisory. •Plan, prepare, promote, and implement programming for children both in house and outreach. •Collection development; selection of library materials in various formats and areas as assigned; read reviews and other evaluative materials to select, analyze, evaluate, and deselect materials. •Promote library services and programs to various communities including business, civic, and education groups; provide training presentations to the public on library services; prepare instructional materials. •Handle and resolve questions/problems from patrons and other institutions. •Instruct and assist library users in use of electronic resources and other library materials; troubleshoot and maintain various pieces of equipment; monitor public service computer usage. •Develop and maintain web pages and other computer related programs. •Prepare reports and develop recommendations for upper management on areas of library services effecting youth services; recommend corrective action to resolve conflicts/problems. •Responsible for scheduling and reservations of meeting rooms. •Monitor volunteer recruitment, training & assignments under the direction of the department head. •Participate in professional associations and activities; read and review professional journals and publications; be aware of current trends in public library services; attend continuing education programs. •May serve as person in charge of department, or building, as assigned including nights, weekends, or in the absence of a supervisor; monitor open/closing procedures as assigned; implement library policies and procedures. •Assist in other departments as needed. •Attend staff, departmental, library, and district-wide meetings; may participate in committee service and special events. •Perform other related duties as assigned. •May be required to drive personal or library vehicle on library business.

Salary and Benefits

$21.07 – $32.42 per hour. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance, HDPL pays100% for employee and 82% for dependents. In addition, HDPL offers paid short and long term disability insurance, long term care, PERS membership, tuition reimbursement, 125 plan (health and dependent care reimbursement), flexible schedule, generous vacation, sick, holiday and personal days. This position is non-exempt.

Schedule

Schedule includes evening and weekend hours.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Normally seated, standing or walking at will; normal physical activity including some bending, pushing, pulling, and carrying, which may range up to 45 lbs., upon occasion. Keyboarding and working at a computer monitor for extended periods required. Extended periods of standing may be required when working at reference desk. Phone usage, reading, speaking, and listening required. Interaction with library users and vendors may include stressful situations related to resolving situations or problems.
