By using this site, one is able to search U.S. Census Records, birth and death records, and historical newspapers. There are also links to online genealogy courses. One can also obtain instruction on building your family tree, sign up for genealogy message boards, and get references to books and software.

Library of Congress
Local History and Genealogy Reading Room
A portal of information regarding genealogy research at the Library of Congress. Provides information on the Collections the Library houses, links on regimental histories. Also gives a list of full-text published guides to the Library's genealogy collections. Gives tips to beginning family research.
New York Public Library
NYPL's collection specializes in materials regarding genealogy, history, heraldry, and personal and family names. The collection is publicly accessible and does not require membership. One can search passenger lists, DAR and Loyalists resources, and Irish sources, among others. NYPL also provides reference correspondence by fax, mail, or e-mail.
National Archives and Records Administration
NARA provides access to the Federal population censuses, 1790 - 1920, military service and pension records, ca. 1776-1900; immigration records, 1820-1957; and naturalization records.
They also give information on their selection of genealogy guides and finding aids, including Black History and civil war guides.
Cyndi's List
Extensive lists of Genealogical Sites. One can search the lists topically and alphabetically. The site also provides a selection webpages for beginning researchers, as well as a FAQ on genealogy research.
California State Library
This website guides the user to the resources in the California Section Collection. California Census materials are available on microfilm. A list of compilations made by the California Chapters of the DAR is also given. If you are unable to visit the facility, they can provide a list of private researchers as well.
U.S. Census Bureau
The Census Bureau can search the federal census from 1910-1990 and issue a transcript which may include the person's age, race, sex, state or country of birth, etc. They also have frequently occurring English and Spanish surnames from the 1990 census.
Ellis Island
Using this website's database, one can search the Ellis Island passenger lists from 1892 to 1924.
U.S. Gen Web
Volunteers working together to provide genealogical research. They have provided links to databases arranged by state. They also have several census and tombstone projects online. There is also a section for beginning researchers.
