HENDERSON, Nev. – With 2008 upon us, it’s that time of year again – the time when people worldwide dust off their tennis shoes and cut down on the fast food. And in support of a healthy community, Henderson Libraries has teamed up with the Las Vegas Running Team to host their inaugural Read & Run for Your Health 5K Run/1 Mile Walk.
And while the event does not require its participants to run while reading, it does promote running to benefit reading – healthy reading. With proceeds from the event going toward funding a more robust, current and updated consumer health collection through the purchase of books, magazines, DVDs and audio books, as well as funding consumer health programs, Henderson Libraries will provide a wealth of information for anyone looking to get healthy and shed those extra pounds.
“Getting healthy is important, and we’re hoping this race will serve as an avenue to a healthier Henderson,” said Tom Fay, executive director for Henderson Libraries. “We thought a race would serve as a fun and appropriate way to get the community involved in making information on the subject accessible to everyone while simultaneously complementing or jump-starting their own exercise routine.”
The family-oriented race will take place Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7 a.m. and is walker-friendly. It will begin and end at the James I. Gibson Library – located at
280 South Water Street , just off Basic Road – with the course looping through downtown Henderson and the Water Street District area.Prizes will be given to the top three runners in each age category along with the overall fastest three finishers. Registration is $25 until Feb. 15, $30 Feb. 16-23. Day of race registration is $35. Registration can be completed at Henderson Libraries’ Gibson, Paseo Verde (
280 South Green Valley Parkway ) or Lydia Malcolm ( 2960 Sunridge Heights Parkway ) libraries or online at http://www.active.com/event_detail.cfm?EVENT_ID=1470890.
