Local Special Olympics athlete, mom to participate in Henderson Libraries inaugural Read & Run for Your Health Feb. 23

Event to benefit Henderson Libraries’ consumer health collection

HENDERSON, Nev. That red ball rolling down the lane at the local bowling alley just might be Special Olympics athlete Cari Davis’. The 31-year-old Henderson resident has earned nearly 60 medals in Special Olympic events – from power lifting, to bowling, to track – since she first launched her athletic career in 1988.

Now Davis is bringing her winning enthusiasm to Henderson Libraries’ inaugural Read & Run for your Health 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Feb. 23. It’s a perfect fit because Davis and her mom, Sue Davis, love going to the library together.

“We use the library a lot,” said Sue Davis. “I love the Paseo Verde Library. It’s just so user friendly!”

Sue Davis said that even as a kid growing up in Iowa, she and her family would spend three hours in the Bookmobile when it came to town, and even today, she always has a book in her purse. And Sue Davis likes that Cari, who has cerebral palsy, can find an ample amount of books for her reading level.

While there will be a variety of prizes offered for Read & Run participants, for Cari Davis, the event is something fun to do with her mom.

“We support anything to get people to the library,” Sue Davis said.

The family-oriented Read & Run event will take place at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. Participants will loop around the downtown Henderson Water Street District as the event starts and ends at the James I. Gibson Library,

280 S. Water Street
. With proceeds from the event going toward funding a more robust, current and updated consumer health collection through the purchase of books, magazines, DVDs and audio books, as well as funding consumer health programs, Henderson Libraries will provide a wealth of information for anyone looking to get healthy.

Cari Davis leads a very busy life. She works at the local Opportunity Village and keeps an active training schedule for the Special Olympics. While she has done almost every event, she said she enjoys bowling the most.

And it isn’t all fun and games for Cari Davis. For the past few years, she and her mom have traveled to Washington, D.C. to speak with elected officials to lobby for the Special Olympics. This March, Cari Davis will head back to the capitol for Hill Days as a representative from Nevada.

But on Feb. 23, Cari will be one of the many participants in Henderson Libraries’ Read & Run event. Registration is $25 until Feb. 15, $30 Feb. 16-22. Day of race registration is $35. Registration can be completed at any of Henderson Libraries’ four branches.

Established in 1943 as one library in Downtown Henderson, Henderson Libraries now offers four locations throughout Henderson and cooperates with the other public libraries in Southern Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Clark County School District and all other libraries around the state to provide quality service for Nevada’s residents.
