Mitch Albom to speak at Henderson Pavilion Oct. 14 as part of One Book Henderson festivities

Three-part series inspired by One Book Henderson’s first read, ‘The Five People You Meet in Heaven,’ to explore life beyond

HENDERSON, Nev. – Henderson Libraries will host its Reflections Series – a free, three-part series exploring life beyond – beginning Thursday, Oct. 11, as part of its inaugural One Book Henderson.

Through One Book Henderson, Henderson Libraries is encouraging the entire Henderson community to read one book, bestselling author Mitch Albom’s “The Five People You Meet in Heaven,” at the same time. Hosted by Henderson Libraries, the One Book Henderson movement will include a total of 30 events inspired by the book that will take place throughout October and into November.

Albom’s first novel, “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” is about an amusement park mechanic named Eddie who dies trying to save a little girl. Upon Eddie’s death, he finds himself in heaven, where he meets five people who explain to him the meaning of his life.

The first Reflections Series event, Religious Views of Life Beyond, will include a panel of leaders from various religious denominations who will discuss views of an afterlife and will take questions from the audience. The panel discussion will take place Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Paseo Verde Library Reading Room – located at 280 S. Green Valley Parkway, just off Paseo Verde Parkway.

The second event in the series, Medical Views of Life Beyond, will bring together two trauma surgeons, a retired psychologist and an author and researcher of near-death experiences, who will examine what happens when a person dies and then comes back to life. The panel discussion will take place Thursday, Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Henderson Convention Center – located at 200 S. Water Street, just off W. Atlantic Ave.

For the third event in the three-part series, A Personal Experience of Life Beyond, Matthew Dovel, author of "My Last Breath," will share his two near-death experiences (one in heaven, one in hell) through excerpts from his July "20/20" and "Good Morning America" appearances and will talk about how his life was changed by both. The discussion will take place Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Paseo Verde Library Conference Room – also located at 280 S. Green Valley Parkway.

The One Book movement was established in 1998 by Seattle librarian, book reviewer and best-selling author Nancy Pearl in an effort to bring the community together. What began as “If All Seattle Read the Same Book” has since grown to more than 350 programs that have taken place throughout the country.

The public will choose, by ballot, the next book to read through One Book Henderson in November. The One Book Henderson novel for 2008 will be revealed at the One Book Henderson 2007 concluding event – a community viewing of the movie “The Five People You Meet in Heaven” at The District Nov. 18.

Established in 1943 as one library in Downtown Henderson, Henderson Libraries now offers four locations throughout Henderson and cooperates with the other public libraries in Southern Nevada, the Nevada System of Higher Education, the Clark County School District and all other libraries around the state to provide quality service for Nevada’s residents.
