Author Dean Karnazes
An athlete and bestselling author, Karnazes is a passionate advocate for healthy, active living. He began running during his childhood and in high school, but his desire for running waned as he got older. However, on his 30th birthday, after a night of celebrating, Karnazes was struck with an "aha!" moment, and he decided he needed to run. Karnazes ran 30 miles that night. By morning he couldn't even walk, as he hadn't regularly run in years, and he called his wife to pick him up from a neighboring town. From that point on, after the weeks of recovery his birthday run required, running became a mission for Karnazes. In his memoir, "Ultramarathon Man," Karnazes explores what it takes both physically and mentally to run distances both extreme in length and in conditions. He relives his journey from running the 100-mile Western States Endurance Run to running an ultra-marathon in 120-degree heat in Death Valley and later, the first-ever marathon at the South Pole. Karnazes' message has been so well-received not because he runs hundreds of miles, but because he inspires others to be the best they can be. Karnazes values the importance of overall strength and fitness. Get your complimentary tickets from any Henderson Libraries location, or at the Henderson Pavilion Box Office. |
